Washed AA from Kiunyu Factory
Kiu Blush comes from Kiunyu Coffee Factory in the Ngariama area of Gichugu, Kirinyaga, with a view of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. The name comes from the Kikuyu word munyu, red soil, after the fertile volcanic soil in the area. The wet mill was established in the 1960s and is run by the Karithathi Farmers Cooperative Society, which receives cherries from the villages of Kagumoini, Kianduma, Kiambuku, Kiambatha, Gature and Kiamuki.
The coffee is grown at around 1,650 metres. The vast majority is SL28 and SL34 with small amounts of Ruiru 11 and Batian. AA is the bean size, not a quality grade.
Vanilla, stone fruit and red berries
The farmers selectively pick the red, ripe cherries, which are weighed, sorted and graded on arrival. The coffee is pulped with water from the Karithathi river through a recirculation system, fermented overnight, washed, soaked and dried on raised beds, where the parchment is turned regularly for even drying. The process water is filtered back into the ground through nine soak pits.
It is the softer of our two Kenyans. Vanilla and stone fruit up front, red berries in the middle and a floral, sweet finish. We roast it light for filter and a little deeper for espresso, where it turns soft and sweet.
