Natural Arara from Mantiqueira de Minas
Campanha comes from Sítio Beija Flor in Campanha, Mantiqueira de Minas, where Natália Moreira Brito and Augusto Borges Ferreira produced the lot at 1,400 metres. Natália is a second-generation producer and cupper, and through her export company Jaguara she works closely with small producers in the region to raise quality.
The variety is Arara, a Brazilian cross known for high sweetness and a clean, fruity cup. Nordic Approach tasted the coffee last year and asked for it again, and I can see why.
Strawberry, lychee and cocoa
The coffee is natural processed. The cherries are dried whole with the fruit pulp on, and that is where the sweetness and the red fruit notes come from. In the cup you get strawberry and lychee up front and a round cocoa at the base, without the heavy, nutty side people often associate with Brazilian coffee.
We roast it light for filter, where the fruit is clearest, and a little deeper for espresso, where the cocoa carries a sweet, round shot. A coffee that is easy to love, but with more to say than most Brazils.
